I spend Halloween working. My co-worker gets me to dress up as a pig.
At first I agreed to do this because I didn't think I would actually have to dress up - I mean, come on -
who really goes through with that stuff?
Well, apparently I do... let's see if I can dig up a picture from my cell phone.

Roerich Pact

While waiting tables yesterday, I met a woman who works for Operation Peace Through Unity. Since I was wearing a slightly sheer blouse she could see and asked about my tattoo.

I wasn't aware of Nicholas Roerich's background when I got the tattoo. Putting it plainly, I was 18 and wanted a simple tattoo on my shoulder blade. I looked for an internationally understood symbol of peace; the Roerich symbol was really the only icon - without some nerdy sci-fi connotation - that I could find. For all its worth, this lady is the first person to legitimately recognize it....

So, we got to talking about it's origin and she mentions that Nicholas Roerich has a museum on the upper west side! Below is some information I found on the museum's website (which you can also check out here).

The design of the Banner shows three spheres surrounded by a circle,
in magenta color on a white background. Of the many national and
individual interpretations of this symbol, the most usual are perhaps
those of Religion, Art and Science as aspects of Culture, which is the
surrounding circle; or of past, present, and future achievements of
humanity guarded within the circle of Eternity. The symbol can be seen
in the seal of Tamerlane, in Tibetan, Caucasian, and Scandinavian jewelry,
and on Byzantine and Roman artifacts. The image of the Strasbourg Madonna
is adorned with it. It can be seen in many of Roerich's paintings, most
notably Madonna Oriflamma, in which Woman is depicted as the carrier and
defender of the Banner. In this sign and the motto, Pax Cultura, that
accompanies it, is symbolized Roerich's vision for humanity. As he wrote:
“Let us be united — you will ask in what way? You will agree with me:
in the easiest way, to create a common and sincere language. Perhaps in
Beauty and Knowledge.”
Roerich's efforts to promulgate such a treaty resulted, finally, on
April 15, 1935, in the signing by the nations of the Americas — members of
the Pan American Union — of The Roerich Pact, in the White House in Washington.
This is a treaty still in force. Many individuals, groups, and associations
around the world continue to promote awareness of the Pact, the Banner, and
their underlying principles.

The High Contracting Parties, animated by the purpose of giving conventional form to the postulates of the Resolution approved on December 16, 1933, by all the States represented at the Seventh International Conference of American States, held at Montevideo, which recommended to "the Governments of America which have not yet done so that they sign the 'Roerich Pact', initiated by the Roerich Museum in the United States, and which has as its object, the universal adoption of a flag, already designed and generally known, in order thereby to preserve in any time of danger all nationally and privately owned immovable monuments which form the cultural treasure of peoples", have resolved to conclude a treaty with that end in view, and to the effect that the treasures of culture be respected and protected in time of war and in peace, have agreed upon the following articles:
ARTICLE I

The historic monuments, museums, scientific, artistic, educational and cultural institutions shall be considered as neutral and as such respected and protected by belligerents. The same respect and protection shall be due to the personnel of the institutions mentioned above. The same respect and protection shall be accorded to the historic monuments, museums, scientific, artistic, educational and cultural institutions in time of peace as well as in war.
ARTICLE II

The neutrality of, and protection and respect due to, the monuments and institutions mentioned in the preceding article, shall be recognized in the entire expanse of territories subject to the sovereignty of each of the signatory and acceding States, without any discrimination as to the State allegiance of said monuments and institutions. The respective Governments agree to adopt the measures of internal legislation necessary to insure said protection and respect.
ARTICLE III

In order to identify the monuments and institutions mentioned in article I, use may be made of a distinctive flag (red circle with a triple red sphere in the circle on a white background) in accordance with the model attached to this treaty.
ARTICLE IV

The signatory Governments and those which accede to this treaty, shall send to the Pan American Union, at the time of signature or accession, or at any time thereafter, a list of the monuments and institutions for which they desire the protection agreed to in this treaty. The Pan American Union, when notifying the Governments of signatures or accessions, shall also send the list of monuments and institutions mentioned in this article, and shall inform the other Governments of any changes in said list.
ARTICLE V

The monuments and institutions mentioned in article I shall cease to enjoy the privileges recognized in the present treaty in case they are made use of for military purposes.
ARTICLE VI

The States which do not sign the present treaty on the date it is opened for signature, may sign or adhere to it at any time.
ARTICLE VII

The instruments of accession, as well as those of ratification and denunciation of the present treaty, shall be deposited with the Pan American Union, which shall communicate notice of the act of deposit to the other signatory or acceding States.
ARTICLE VIII

The present treaty may be denounced at any time by any of the signatory or acceding States, and the denunciation shall go into effect three months after notice of it has been given to the other signatory or acceding States.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the Undersigned Plenipotentiaries, after having deposited their full powers found to be in due and proper form, sign this treaty on behalf of their respective governments, and affix thereto their seals, on the dates appearing opposite their signatures.

I still can't figure out what this says but, seriously, my name is in there!

Here's a bit of street graff. that made me think of Colin Trechter.

I saw this amazing Spock piece at Le Poisson Rouge a few Fridays back
(it's made out of spools of thread).

I'm obsessed with the 7th floor.

Lately I've been taking walks around my neighborhood in the
morning. I will let you in on a little secret: the intersection
of Cypress and Troutman offers this beautiful view of Manhattan!

I can't imagine grade school with a luxury like eating hot dogs through a fence at recess...
that is - I couldn't imagine it - until I saw this.

I need to upload quite a few snapshots, but in the meantime...
here are some extra shots of work stuff.

My sister came into the restaurant last Saturday night.
We were busy and I had my back to the bar; while talking to a table
she walked up and gingerly pinched my ass.

This is a bed-side thermos. It has a lid that doubles as a cup.
It's made of very fine glass, elegant, and fun to photograph.

This is my favorite.

I've listened to this song (Master Of None by Beach House)
several times today. I think it's really great....

Waylon Jennings, Tina Fey, William Eggleston, creamy smog, the smell of frost,
and 25 to-do lists chock full o' practical tasks I just never seem to get to...

I need a day off.

I don't feel outlandish in my demands and requests
- although, people keep reminding me of the looming economic crisis -
I just need a li'l break from that rushing whir outside of my head.

I'm dreaming of an Indian Summer and skinny dipping in a natural hot spring
on the Jersey/Penn. line. Even better I'll hop a train Westward; read some books,
photograph strange places, and add fodder to small-town gas station banter...
Run around in an area of fresh cut grass, barefooted and drunk,
without worry of glass or dog crap. And chiggers.
Chiggers... does anybody recall what those bugs were exactly? Illinois was
full of them. They left bites smaller than mosquitoes (bites), but in a triad pattern;
always around your ankles and pantylines.
I always thought they were kind of pretty, like connect the dot triangles
in patterns of pinky symmetry.

I want my eyes to burn from sea salt air. And to feel that pang of terror,
that never fails to creep in my guts right around night fall,
when the water turns black as raw oil and I start to imagine seaweed
morphing into Ursula's soul garden captives.
I swear, I'm going to take a vacation soon.
I'm brimming with anticipation, and my reserve for work is burning away fast.

I went to Minneapolis recently to deal in and do some art-making...
this is work I never tire of, but always seem to get to last.
Regardless, it was a nice break and I got to see some people I've dearly missed.

My lovely girl, Brenda, has this entire attic to her art-doings...

Stephen took this picture of me at Grumpy's; right before I butchered 'None O' Yo Business' by Salt-N-Pepa. I decide tonight that remembering being really good at rapping as a nine-year-old, in no way verifies you can ACTUALLY rap that song... it got ugly.

Teching an event at the New Museum.

There was this spotlight 9/11 memorial that looked creepily like an alien abduction.

KTP and I got into her apt. building the same time her neighbor did - thankfully
- because she forgot her keys in her apartment.

We had the doggies and a bottle of wine with us while
we waited for M.o. on the roof.

Free Blood is excellent!

I almost squished one of these guys.

M.o. gets a new iPhone.

While out for Mexican food, we sit in this restaurant that
has booths covered in vintage tapestries. I used to own this tapestry;
the deer looks like an alien humanoid.

Yesterday I organized this room for 7 hours with a guy named Daniel Turner.

He makes wonderful things you can see here

We go see the Usa Is a Monster. I can't get any decent pictures of the show, unfortunately.

The Sky Is Falling!

It's been approximately a month (4 weeks today) since I first arrived.
I can't decide whether it feels like much less or way more....

Sunsets are an hour earlier.

The weather has been bizarre and spectacular lately!
Most credit for the crazies goes to Hurricane Hannah.

There are barely any people out on Saturday.

This church is my next door neighbor. In this photo you can see half of my apartment,
and a third of our front patio. Sometimes, on Thursday nights - say,
around 10pm - the church holds services on the sidewalk in front of my house...
its not exactly my favorite time of the week.

This fish tank exists in my apartment.
I feed the fish and there is a timer set on the lights.

My landlord keeps his cast-off records (he djs) in the apartment.
OMG.
They aren't just pretty... he has great taste.
I am in a world of vinyl these days....

Here are some lady-friends of mine, M.O. and KtP.
They are roommates, share many things, and have awesome
technological abilities in their abode.

Things they have going on:
a lovely yellow couch
a great stereo system
2 chihuahuas
2 iPhones
a video intercom to the front door
roof access (in combo with amazing skyline view)
and the ability to control the stereo with said phones...

wow.

Oh yeah, and they have an elevator...
ballin', these girls have it made.

I won't lie, during my last two weeks in Mpls I splurge on sushi and karaoke...
Throw in some espresso-infused vodka and you have yourself a perfect summer evening.

My very last night in Minneapolis, a few friends gather
at my place and I make guacomole, mango salsa, beans and rice,
and fried tofu. We have Pacificos, vinho verde, and Chambord+champagnes...
so so soooo good.

Where did the last month go?

It all started with me finishing teaching a class of high school students for SES. Here is our 'final exhibition.'

I'm making a photograph here tomorrow.

My sweet friend KtP shot off to NYC before me. All her friends came out to Grumpy's for a Mpls. karaoke adieu.
